The ancient Porta Ferrara, known as the “Pôrta ed Sòtta” or ‘lower gate’, was named after Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1887 to mark a patriotic celebration.
The old medieval building, which had fallen into disrepair, was completely rebuilt in 1830 to a design by the engineer Giuseppe Filippetti. Intended as a district prison, it was used as such until recent years. The interior, which still retains its original appearance with the caretaker’s quarters, the cells and the visiting room, now houses the Environmental Archaeological Museum.
