“I, Brother Francis” – 800 years of a great adventure

Exhibition curated by Friars Minor of the Porziuncola in Assisi, under the patronage of the National Committee for the celebrations marking the 800th anniversary.

Scientific Committee: Stefano Brufani, President of the International Society for Franciscan Studies, Lecturer in Franciscan Studies at the University of Perugia; Friar Luca Di Pasquale; Friar Giuseppe Gioia; Friar Gianpaolo Masotti; Grado Giovanni Merlo, Honorary President of the International Society for Franciscan Studies, Professor Emeritus of the History of Christianity at the University of Milan; Sister Cristiana Mondonico, President of the Federation of the Poor Clares of Saint Clare and Saint Agnes; Friar Francesco Piloni, Provincial Minister; Friar Alfio Vespoli.

The aim of the exhibition is Rediscovering Francis of Assisi, the poor soul who lived up to his humanity only by following the Gospel.

The aim is thus to delve into Francis’s experience, into his restless humanity and the drama of his life, which ultimately leads to joy and reconciliation.

The aim of the exhibition is to foster a genuine encounter with Brother Francis by placing his Testament at the heart of the narrative, which highlights his anthropological turning point: the unity of the person – spirit, soul and body – and Francis’s relationship with God, with himself, with other people and with Creation. Francis addresses both the friars who knew him and those who would come after; the Testament is therefore a document which, to this day, has remained fundamental to the Order, alongside the Rule, and a cornerstone of its work as a founding document.

The exhibition highlights the links between the Testament and the present day, and it is precisely this contemporary relevance that makes the life of St Francis so interesting today.

The exhibition itinerary will help visitors to identify with Francis through the text and a selection of images of works by Fr. Sidival Fila, a Franciscan friar and artist, whose artistic practice is based on the use of discarded materials, particularly textiles, including linen, cotton, silk, hemp, brocades and other previously used materials.

To conclude this journey, a small but no less important section will be devoted to Saint Clare, as the one who safeguarded Francis’s testament and, by living it out, bore witness to it.
