An important example of 19th-century rural and religious architecture, the Budrie complex comprises, in addition to the parish church, the Oratory of St Joseph – where the saint is buried – the Casa del Maestro and the mother house of the Minime Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows.
In the fertile and lush countryside to the south, nestled against the bank of the Samoggia stream, lies the hamlet of San Bartolo, comprising three distinct villages: Le Budrie, Borgata Città and La Villa. Just a few metres from the magnificent Villa Caprara – an imposing building constructed around 1650 as the country residence of the powerful senatorial Caprara family, now known as Palazzo Orsi Mangelli – stands the immaculately maintained sanctuary dedicated to Saint Clelia Barbieri. Founder of the Minime Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows and canonised in 1989 by John Paul II, the saint was born, lived and died at a very young age in this village.
