Already in existence in medieval times and known as the Porta della Braglia, the Porta Bologna or “Pôrta ed Sòuvar”, the building was completely rebuilt in 1781 to a design by Carlo Francesco Dotti of Bologna, the architect of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of San Luca.
It is said that, in this regard, the design plans were misinterpreted when the gate was built, with the internal façade being mistaken for the external one. In fact, the façade facing the town centre features the town’s coat of arms and is more monumental and imposing than the external one, where one can see the plaque erected in 1861 in honour of Victor Emmanuel II, from whom it took the name Porta Vittoria. In front of the gate, framed by the arch, stands the bronze sculpture *Largo gesto per un massimo spazio* by Quinto Ghermandi.
